New Hampshire’s Trout Unlimited mission is to conserve, protect and restore North America’s coldwater fisheries and their watersheds.
From the beginning in 1959, Trout Unlimited was guided by the principle that if we “take care of the fish, then the fishing will take care of itself.” And that principle was grounded in science. “One of our most important objectives is to develop programs and recommendations based on the very best information and thinking available,” said Trout Unlimited’s first president, Dr. Casey E. Westell Jr. “In all matters of trout management, we want to know that we are substantially correct, both morally and biologically.”
In 1962-63, Trout Unlimited prepared its first policy statement on wild trout, and persuaded the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to discard “put-and-take” trout stocking and start managing for wild trout and healthy habitat. On the heels of that success, anglers quickly founded Trout Unlimited chapters across the country.
Trout, steelhead, charr and salmon across the nation are in trouble from years of abuse and neglect and ever-increasing population and development pressures. These fish can’t speak for themselves; they depend on concerned citizens to speak for them. And the members of New Hampshire’s Trout Unlimited do just that.
Trout Unlimited’s national fundraising initiatives such as the Coldwater Conservation Fund and the Embrace-A-Stream program provide hundreds of thousands of dollars annually for groundbreaking scientific research and local in-stream restoration projects across the country. Trout Unlimited”s national office advocates in Washington, D.C. and in the courts, and supports our individual chapters and state councils.
By combining “on the ground” restoration efforts, a cutting-edge scientific research and effective advocacy on behalf of our coldwater fisheries, Trout Unlimited has been the most effective steward for coldwater fisheries nationwide and in New Hampshire. In all of this action, our members are the most important element.
Trout Unlimited’s strength has always rested in its thousands of dedicated members, donors and volunteers, many of them anglers, committed to conserving trout and salmon and providing better recreation and fishing within New Hampshire.
